Even young Sarracenia which have not yet developed a “mouth,” when opened are found half full of water. Both plants bear a “blossom”— actually the seed-—which is called a biscuit flower becauseof its cur ious shape, and Rehder makes good use of these in decorations. In the same savannahs with the pitcher and trumpet plants is the peculiar Venus flytrap, which is even more spectacular, since it is the only one of the carnivorous plants to employ the steel-trap principle. Much smaller than Sar racenia, it is yet a ‘showy flower, with deep red petals rai ging from deep red on the inside of the trap to brilliant green outsid.- It bears a little white blossom in May. Called “the most wonderful plant in the world” by Darwin, the fly-trap has a highly restrict ed habitat and is rarely found outside of Southeastern North Carolina.
